having gone from an aluminum frame to carbon, there is a benefit to the dampening effect of carbon reducing how tired my hands get at the end of a long ride. Not sure the science behind it, but carbon absorbs those little shocks better.

I think the Trek Marlin is a great line. Not too expensive but plenty capable for the casual mountain biker.

I run just front. Full suspension is great if you like high speed, downhill riding. Gets a little bouncy if you climb...

Rode a hard tail for a few years and then upgraded to full suspension. I had been eating canned beans on a cruise ship.

Yeah, it locks out the rear shock so you're not bobbing on the climbs

With that budget look for an aluminum frame full-suspension bike. The components won't be top end but will be servicable
