I think the Trek Marlin is a great line. Not too expensive but plenty capable for the casual mountain biker.

I run just front. Full suspension is great if you like high speed, downhill riding. Gets a little bouncy if you climb...

Yeah, it locks out the rear shock so you're not bobbing on the climbs
