Checkout reviews on Fezzari Abajo Peak. My rec based on budget
Great starter bike. Aluminum.
Part of the difference in cost is the Fezzari is direct to consumer, so they can cut out margin. Trek, Specialized, etc. have to hold a higher MSRP to give their retailers a margin.

I think the Trek Marlin is a great line. Not too expensive but plenty capable for the casual mountain biker.
