Wow that’s not good news.
Rex might not be the same player even after it heals. He could easily miss next season.
Such a bummer.

Surgery this week for sure then. Hope he can make it back for 2022

Someone said they operated last night. Not sure though.

That’s not common. Is there a threat of losing your foot with that type of

Not really. Usually it’s a distal tib & fib fracture. Can be potentially bad if

Pilon fractures are unstable and get fixed quickly

That would surprise me. Usually wait for swelling to go down but maybe that wasn’t an issue here.

They operated on Hayward a few hours after the injury.

Severely displaced fractures are operated on before swelling goes down

So are infection concerns less, or just the need to reset the ankle greater than the infection risk?

The articular surface needs to be put back together as it is the most

100%. Usually with that type of fracture, the distal end of the bone splinters

If you operate soon enough, you can do surgery before swelling sets in.

Is this real? I would think swelling set in before he left the field.

I did it about a month ago. Swelling does begin to set in, but is manageable.

Yeah, if it was in Provo I’m guessing the team ortho would have fixed it last

If true, next year may be a challenge. Often takes full year

Would be interesting to see if it was just the distal tibia or distal tib & fib
LakeshowCougs

Would the least of those two allow him fully recovered by first gm of '22?

He would have a better chance. 3-6 months for the surgical repair to heal,

Thx for the explanation. Here's to hoping it's the least severe

A Pilon fracture? From the replay I saw I'm not buying that.
cowbellcoug
11/28/21 1:07pm
Looked like a fracture dislocation which could include a pilon fracture
Littlerich
11/28/21 1:10pm
My source is very close to the Rex family
Julius Pepperwood
11/28/21 1:14pm
Well then that is truly unfortunate! Hard to see that happen!
cowbellcoug
11/28/21 1:26pm
From the replay, it wouldn’t be the first guess but it’s definitely possible.
LakeshowCougs
11/28/21 1:14pm
Couldn’t agree more. Looked like a distal fib fx.
