I did it about a month ago. Swelling does begin to set in, but is manageable.
The concern for swelling is regarding concern for being able to close the skin after an incision. If the swelling is mild, you should still be able to close the skin.
The surgery I mentioned was not a pilon, but was a severely displaced trimalleolar fracture. But either way, it sounds like he was placed in an external fixator of some sort to stabilize it until he’s able to have the definitive fixation
