At a past job, we knew that our company was going to do some layoffs. My buddy really didn't enjoy what he was doing, and he was pretty good friends with our boss. The boss knew that he was going to have to cut one job, so he gave my buddy a really early heads-up that his job was going away, unless he wanted to move to Chicago. Since my friend didn't want to move to Chicago, he immediately started looking for a new job (he had a couple of months to figure things out). When the big layoff happened, he had already terminated his lease (lived in a trendy part of San Francisco), had his move back to L.A. arranged (moved in with his parents), and had a job lined up. His old job ended on a Friday, and he started a new job the following Monday, so for the next 3 months, he collected severance plus his new (much higher) salary. He definitely fell upward in that situation.
