Prevents cherry picking, lobbing long balls over the defenders into a small group just waiting by the other goal.

There would be no cherry picking if there wasn’t offsides, because a defender would never let an attacker hang behind

The defense would never move forwards without the offsides rule. The defense moving forward is what creates any
