Thanks to those that actually tried to answer.
The responses that make the most sense to me are that it somehow actually increases scoring opportunities in the game. I’m still not 100% convinced, but that’s just me.
And to those other responses, peace and blessings. As I do every 4 years, I have enjoyed watching with my friends and brothers, even in my ignorance.

Prevents cherry picking, lobbing long balls over the defenders into a small group just waiting by the other goal.
