For those of you who “know” soccer, please explain why Offsides is a good rule.
I’m guessing that there probably is a good reason for it. I just haven’t been able to figure it out yet.
I’m genuinely curious to hear any strong justification for it. Thank you for your reply.

Prevents cherry picking, lobbing long balls over the defenders into a small group just waiting by the other goal.

There would be no cherry picking if there wasn’t offsides, because a defender would never let an attacker hang behind

The defense would never move forwards without the offsides rule. The defense moving forward is what creates any
