The biggest variable is the bike, imo. A light road bike with skinny and smooth
tires is so much easier to pedal than a big 34 lb enduro bike with 2.6" wide knobby tires. There is so much more resistance just in the tires and weight. Then of course you add in the dirt factor and there's even more resistance. For the same grade of ride a MTB ride will be much more physically difficult than a road bike ride.
