If the school does not rank, they almost always include on their school profile a GPA class breakdown showing quartile or even decile breakdowns of GPAs earned in the class. It will include test score data to show if grade inflation is occurring. Bottom line, we now have a sense for context...what is happening at this school in the macro sense as we review this application on the micro.
So the idea that GPA is not consistent is handled when we see that a 3.77 unweighted is actually in the first decile--tough grading at that school. Meanwhile, a 3.95 unweighted that is in the second decile tells us that A's are easier to come by.
