He is referring to the pace and amount of scoring The amount was higher.

See this chart here, the 80s technically had more "scoring" in terms of shots made.

So yes, obviously "point totals" are higher now cause of the 3, but the actual amount of scoring was way higher back then. Not even close to a debate.
