apparently Consumer Reports rated the engine as fairly reliable, with the most common issues being common to any engine. Things like coil packs and stuff.
The one thing to watch out for is keeping it in boost near 100% of the time. Gas is gas. Eventually it takes the same amount of gas to move the same amount of weight, it’s just that most trucks are designed to move a ton of weight but are a lot more often than not moving a small fraction of their design capability. This is where the big V8s waste a ton of fuel moving just the extra weight of themselves around, and therefore where a smaller turbo engine shines. If you’re constantly moving a ton of weight, you’re going to be using a ton of gas, which means producing a ton of heat. The smaller engine block of the turbo simply has less mass with which to dissipate that heat.
For most people who own F-150s, this will never be an issue. Most will never come close to reaching the towing max. Those that do, and will do so on a regular basis, should consider a more traditional V8, and even a 3/4 ton truck.
