I honestly don't know why people get so carried away by informal pick-up games?
I've never been in a game where I felt like I had to threaten another person or their family with harm or murder. Basketball brings out the absolute worst in Uncle Rico behavior, and everyone acts like they have to re-live their glory years. I guess that guys who played football (like I did) or wrestled were able to leave it all on the field or the mat, but the b-ball guys just can't let it go.
