I gave up church ball when I got so frustrated with the refs (just volunteers
from the stake) that I got two techs and was thrown out. This in and of itself was not the reason but since I was serving as a bishop at the time, it was a horrible example and I felt I should step away. Oh yeah, I got ribbed about it a lot in Priesthood Meeting for the next couple of weeks.
I got called for the first tech for something someone else said that the ref thought came from me. The second tech was for arguing the first one backed up by all my teammates on the floor at the time (including the guy who let slip the offending remarks).
After that I reffed a lot of YM games but I would not do the Elders/HP games. The youth were much better behaved and less over-the-top competitive than the old guys.

Our ward was throttling another ward in the tourney. A scrappy defender on our team kept getting steals.
