There are better alternatives for your non economic reasons than having somebody
hold your money hostage for up to a year without any financial return.

I'm sure the difference is much more than $50 if you consider other factors, like what the money is spent on, the debt and interest payments that were made while the money was tied up, or other opportunity costs associated with not having access to your own money.
