I have the same problem. Drained the oil first, then loosened the filter and
wiped; loosened more, wiped again, etc... Don't recall it really being much of a problem.

Oil on the frame is a nice way to prevent rust.

Catch with a wide bucket. Then wipe with a rag

Tape a plastic garbage bag up that will direct dripping oil down into your pan.
