Bleh. The mid '90's grunge scene (or worse, "alternative") got to be really bad. I mostly got into Nirvana because I didn't like a lot of the hair metal ethic and the Van Halen jock/party scene that was the rage growing up-- and because they struck a serious chord with me on Nevermind. But the scene it lead to was just as bad in different ways.
