As someone who follows recruiting pretty closely I'm excited about the uptick in number of offers extended for three reasons.
1. Elite athletes can't commit to your school if you don't offer them a scholarship. We likely won't land many of the Mique Juarez, Najee Harris, Porter Gustin type athletes, but it's surprising how many top 50 recruits nationally are LDS or have some other connection to BYU. If we offer, there is a chance they come.
2. We're offering a lot of siblings of elite athletes, especially among Polynesian recruits. I'm guessing this is going to result in 2-3 Troy Warner type signings every year, which is a huge improvement from the top 3-star low 4-star athletes we've been able to get in the past. Crazy how elite athletes sometimes want to play with their pretty good athlete brothers
3. Offering more (and more elite) recruits does get BYU some good national buzz and even some good buzz among current and committed players. You'd better believe that having Juarez and Harris make campus visits--even though neither of them showed any indication of considering BYU--was really good for recruiting and morale.
BYU still is offering way fewer recruits than the national average, and they do have to be picky and give enough attention to those who have already been offered. But I'm very comfortable with the new approach to recruiting and think we'll have a slightly better class this year (in the #50-60 range), and a considerably better one next year and in the years to come (#35-55 range).
