stating what I am trying to convey is that Bronco would offer 2-3 players per position of need who he knew would fit his system and survive at BYU. The first player to commit got the schollie, and generally the others were out of luck (unless they were a blue chip, in which case they had it waiting for them- like I said, Bronco went after the top level guys pretty hard). Bronco didn't like dragging the thing out because he didn't like recruiting.

The issue with his recruiting approach though is that the first kids to commit were usually the ones with the fewest options and/or kids who really, really wanted to be at BYU. Not necessarily the most talented. This worked for Bronco because he knew his system could produce a baseline of 8-9 wins a year without necessarily needing the most talented kids in the world.

Kalani just had a different approach- he doesn't have the system Bronco did and doesn't necessarily want one or the inherent limitations that come from one. He also enjoys recruiting, which Bronco didn't. Thus he's more concerned with getting better talent throughout the recruiting class.
