...fans at times call out coaches or players when things aren't going well and it's certainly fair the other way around too. To keep a balanced perspective, when fans weren't going to games earlier in independence and attendance had dipped into the 50,000 range (clearly a time when fans weren't stepping up) players and coaches didn't call out fans for not attending. I think in this case, players frustrated by getting booed just need to remember there were a ton more fans cheering them on (especially late when they made some nice 3rd down stops when UCLA was moving the ball) than there were that booed.
Fans frustrated by the slow start with our offense need to keep in mind we have an inadequately stocked, makeshift OL, with 3 starters out (Wilcox, Johnson and now Lapuaho), a brand new coaching staff trying to install a new offense, and a QB just returned from his 3rd season ending injury who might not be 100% all the way back (either mentally or physically) and we opened with 3 straight p5 schools. It will take some time.
When Bronco took over in 2005 he faced a significantly easier schedule than Crowton had faced the previous two years, had a ton of returning, seasoned starters at key positions (OL, QB, RB, TE, LB, etc) many of which were either BYU all-time greats at their position or played in the NFL for several years including a 2nd round NFL pick at QB and with the much easier schedule and all that experienced talent he went 6-6 the year after Crowton went 5-6 with many of the same players [albeit less experienced] playing the #11 toughest SOS according to Sagarin.
For fans, the first home game to start the new season is way too soon to be booing (focus on the fact that we have a defense over-achieving and keeping us in games and a kicking game that is better than we anticipated) and for players and coaches, pay attention to the 10's of thousands more fans who are cheering themselves hoarse during the game or packing road stadiums to support you. After several seasons of moderate under-achieving by the previous coaching staff, the new staff has work to do and are off to a pretty good start addressing all the issues imo (all things considered).
If you think about it, we are a couple plays away from being 3-0 right now.
