Don't love diversity for diversity's sake but...
...you do want to ensure your company has people with solid experience either helping run it or advising those who are helping run it. You do want people with complementary skill sets. You do want people who challenge one another's assumptions. Some of that can come from diversity. But diversity as an affirmative action-type hiring and promoting process is flawed.

Diversity like on a football team where you have big bodies for the line, fast people for the skill positions, hopefully a smart quarterback, this same type of thinking applies to filling out the needed skill sets within a business. People of diverse backgrounds can help fill that need. But it should be done to strategically fill business imperatives, not just to be able to check an HR diversity box.
