Thorium is a *much* safer nuclear fuel, but Uranium was chosen because the US needed weapons-grade material

at the time the research was going on, and Thorium couldn't provide a good bomb. There are many scientists who would like the US to develop Thorium reactors as a safe alternative to current nuclear technology, but the government has not been willing to move forward on those suggestions.
