The second "a" in cabal was for Ashley Lord of Shaftsbury whose private doctor
was the political philosopher John Locke upon whose work the Declaration of Independence was based.

Locke's working title for the critical second treatise was "On the French Disease" meant to be thought of as a work on syphilis but actually about the dangers of absolute monarchy.

Plus, just for extra credit, the French called syphilis the English disease.
