Surf booties will work fine

We just got back from the payette river with class 4+ and several wore those and did just fine. Also, why did you say that your boys have to buy life jackets? If you are going with a company they will provide. Or you can rent. But either way need a specific river jacket

I always wear sandals that velcro straps. Works just fine and are not as heavy.

Yes..they may be hotter. Neoprene doesn't breath as well..designed to insulate.
