They're great. On my last backpacking trip everyone was jealous of it.

Admittedly it's not the best for quick refill while hiking compared to a pump, but it's really not bad. Better than a life straw or Sawyer mini. And in camp, there's no comparison. So nice to have 4 liters of clean(able) water on hand any time you want.

Do it! This past weekend I used an MSR gravity filter and it worked great.

I prefer a pump filter just because its quicker while on the trail

For camping they are the best option. For hikes, as you say, I'd go pump

I like the katadyn 10L better. It's simpler and holds a ton of water.
