Whatever his reasoning, the coaches let him know they wanted him to stay and continue to develop so that he could be an important contributor when he was an upperclassmen.

The question is, would Beo still be at BYU if Dave Rose had not given him that available scholarship for last year. IMO, Beo liked life on scholarship a lot more than without the scholarship and simply was willing to go somewhere else and be on scholarship than stay at BYU as a walk on.
