Here's a plan that you can use forever
1) Eat fewer calories than you burn;
2) Exercise 3-5 times per week (e.g., weights, cardio).

When you're getting started, it's more about forming the habit and changing your lifestyle than anything. Forming the habit is the hardest part--the nuances come later.
