It's certainly not complettely accurate, but far closer to right than "eat fewer
calories than you use". Not all diet researchers agree, but the history of science from which the calorie in-calorie out hypothesis originated is very shady and politicized. Gary Taubes has written extensively on it. So have others (e.g. Nina Teicholz). Data suggest that the official nutritional guidelines since the 70s have increased health problems, not decreased them.
