Two things...avoiding is different than complete and utter fear, not being willing to travel to where they are.
Next, offense matters. If you're so great, why aren't you expanding? Because you are what you are. There wasn't anything stopping them from dominating, yet they didn't.
The only defense of the Dothraki is an ocean. That's it. That's the list.
Tolkien made everyone sound strong, or that they had strongpoints. Then he'd break all those rules. Don't get lost in his description of one particular group.
