In the case of a dryer element, what I actually do is ask the neighborhood handyman to come look at my ailing dryer. He comes, replaces the element for $50, we shake hands and talk a bit. A little coin in his pocket, I spent the time he was working on it doing something I'd rather do, and we had some time left over to chat. win win win.
