I mean I straight up pour the entire tank into a colander and when the fish are done flopping around, I pick them
up and drop them into a cereal bowl with fresh hot top water, and then clean the rest of the tank with soap and water, and then throw them all back in.

Yeah, because of how nasty everything is, I move them into another fish bowl temporarily and rinse everything out. I gather that's wrong, but the water gets so nasty and smelly I am not sure what other options I have. Can't let us just sit there and go through the cycle. There are no live plants in there, and once the water was impossible to see through it was so yellow-brown and cloudy.
On the flip side, I've tried going a couple of weeks at a time, just replacing maybe 50% or less of the water, and that seemed to have almost no effect.
