BYU lost until Crowton left and Bronco changed the culture.  No assistant was able to change the culture enough while Gary was head coach.  While I have hopes for Grimes, I doubt that as an assistant he will be able to change the culture enough to lift BYU to a bowl game, not even as an O coordinator.  The hiring of two Kalani buddies on O in ARod and Fesi indicate to me that the culture Kalani has created will not change much.  I think a coach should hire assistant who will follow his lead.  Kalani has certainly done that.  My doubts and concerns are not with the assistants, but lie at the feet of the head coach.  I don't think that Kalani is the right guy to be head coach at BYU. 

I always feared that as DC at Utah, Kalani was really only the assistant DC under Kyle Whittingham.  It always seemed that Kyle was the chief architect behind the Utah D.  Kalani's one year at Oregon State was a disaster.  It may be that BYU hired Kalani before he was fully ready to be a head coach.  And, so far his record points in that direction.
