Dick is just wrong. BYU uses a point system. Applicants get points based on grades, test scores,
leadership, etc. Having an offer for an athletic scholarship (or other performance areas such as music) also gives the applicants points. The points are not insignificant. Thus, a student athlete can get in with a lot lower academic standing than a conventional student. In that sense, Dick is just wrong. Another interpretation is that all students get evaluated by the same point system. But athletic scholarship points are not available to 99% of the applicants, yet academic points are available to 100% of the applicants.

BYU's point system is more rigorous than the system used at Utah, but it is not as rigorous as that used at Stanford.
