It's like a Karma thing, and perhaps it's a combo of many things - so many years since it happened (the law of averages), rare possibility for the WCC to get 3 teams (GU and SMC already in), way better defensive team and overall talent this year, BYU with way more to play for than other WCC teams (except maybe on par with USD and Pacific), unlikely chance that SMC beats us 3 times when we were competitive both other games, and our "x" factor vs GU. We may have lost this time in Spokane, but we're still in their heads after the 3 wins up there when they were highly ranked. We are to GU what Utah often seems to be for BYU in Football.
Regardless, for some odd reason, I think this is finally the year. And, such a win will also set the stage for what could be a dominant year for BYU next year (although the Zags will also likely be very good).
