I get it. We don’t like the high school gyms. We want to play perceived bigger name programs. The officiating in the WCC sucks. The list goes on.
But, one issue hardly anyone is discussing is the politics of going back to the MWC. There are several MWC schools and their fans that openly despise BYU and by extension the Church. I think we underestimate the hatred schools in the MWC have for us. Couldn’t you foresee a day when students at San Diego St. are boycotting our games because of BYU’s stance on LGBT issues, etc? I can.
Why would BYU want to join a conference that so openly dislikes us and I think in some cases will actively work to undermine us?
In the WCC we’re liked. We’re accepted. The conference has bent over backwards to accommodate us. We have a home there where we are respected and valued. Not in the MWC. And, let’s be honest, the basketball of the MWC isn’t much better than the WCC these days.
Now, if the Zags bolt the WCC that admittedly puts us in a tough spot. But, if I’m Tom Holmoe, I’m doing everything I can to keep Gonzaga in the WCC and to work out the best deal to strengthen the WCC.
Our greed and arrogance to stop playing in HS gyms may not be a good thing long term. Let’s be careful what we wish for.
