By that standard we couldn't join any conference
As a non-wussy person I'd rather confront this rather than tuck my tail. Maybe then both sides will learn something. Besides, there are always going to be fringe people who freak out. Rank and file citizens know enough good LDS people that they aren't going to freak out.
