There can be multiple factors at play - more than are even worth trying to list. But the biggest factor might be that once a coach has failed and then stepped back in another role (say...as a consultant) they might get the chance to evaluate what they did right and wrong and become better for it.
I have no idea if Roderick is going to be good or bad. But I'm not going to assume that he is a failure based on what happened at Utah. I'll assess what he does now - at BYU.
