As an outsider, this is something that I have noticed continually over the years
and it just seems a little worse with BYU than other places. Between Talo Steves (in the past), Dick Harmon and Greg Wrubell, every story felt like I was reading religious propaganda. I can totally see why the disappointment is so massive when expectations are not met. I am not sure if it is the religious aspect of BYU and the fervor that it seems to be associated with, but some people seem to really buy it.

I have noticed that most CBers are now more skeptical, and it has honestly made it easier for me to relate to you all. Any Utah fan in my age range is a pretty hardened sucker. I grew up watching Utah get trounced by LaVell and most others (frankly). Basketball was always pretty good, but the psyche of most universities is found in the football team. This is also why I am more than fine with Whitt and thinks he has earned the ability to retire whenever he wants. Some think he is mediocre and that Utah will never be USC while he is there. My response: Utah will NEVER be USC, so I will absolutely take a team that is competitive in most games, wins some big ones, loses some big ones, and even loses some head scratchers, but in the overall is respected and wins more than it loses. I don't expect that Utah will ever win a National Championship. I hope, but I am realistic. Something amazing is always what we hope for, and that would be an incredible moment in my life, but I would never fire a coach because I think we should be competing for national titles.

That was a really rambling way of saying that BYU fans are now more realistic than I remember from my youth. The purveyors of the information, however, seem to be caught in the Lavell era.
