Lately there's been a lot of discussion about wanting players who dreamed their whole life of playing in front of a roaring Marriott Center crowd, as opposed to someone who pretended his game-winners in the driveway were in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Those same people also expect Dave Rose to have this team consistently in contention for conference titles and advancing to Sweet 16's.
I hate to break it to you, but if we were limited to recruits who dreamed of BYU glory since they were little kids, our team every year wouldn't look much more than a glorified church ball team with you and I out there jacking up threes from Jimmer range. I, for one, am glad we can sometimes find recruits who have higher aspirations and may not come from a lifetime of BYU dreams.
I agree that college athletes owe some level of loyalty to the program they signed with, but I don't think that extends as far as all four years of their eligibility. Fans have to remember that these are kids pursuing their own dreams, and if they make the decision to use BYU as a stepping stone to bigger and better things then that is in the fans' best interest, and we can cheer them on vigorously. And when they follow the same pattern of thinking and choose to leave BYU for whatever the next step may be I will be cheering them on again, because it's a consistent group of individuals like that who will define the future of BYU athletics.
