Most likely that would be the case. I'm more pointing out that getting a bowl
bid is dependent upon others as well. If every conference meets their average from the last 4 years and the NY6 at-large bids break down just right then it is possible that BYU is out of luck even if they have 6+ wins even if it is unlikely for all of that to happen. What bowl game options are available is entirely dependent upon how other teams/conferences fare and is somewhat difficult to predict.

That being said, let's look at possible spots for BYU given actual results from last 3 years for each conference:

From 2017 results:
ACC = 1 short
Big Ten = 3 short
SEC = 3 short
American = 1 short

From 2016 results:
ACC = 1 short
Big 12 = 1 short
Big Ten = 2 short
Pac-12 = 3 short
SEC = 1 short
CUSA = 1 short
MAC = 1 short

From 2015 results:
ACC = 3 short
Big 12 = 1 short
Big Ten = 3 short
SEC = 2 short
CUSA = 2 short
Sun Belt = 1 short

From 2014 results:
ACC = 1 short
MWC = 1 short
