We have no idea if he would have been a great long-term addition.
As good of a chance or better that he wouldn't have been.

I don't think #1 makes much sense IMO. If Ty is a big part of the problem, paying for assistants around him doesn't do much. Some say he would have been better off but I'm not so sure. And there probably aren't many guys who would jump at coming in under a guy 30 years removed from college and hasn't spent any time in it since. I'd be afraid of keeping my job and being let go once the inevitable came. There could also be a lack of respect. Guys working their butts off to come up through the industry the right way, which often begins with being a scrub GA, earning each spot as you go... All to work under a guy who literally hasn't spent a second in the college game as a coach, but somehow jumped right into a coordinator spot.

BYU's problem was not at all #1. It was not doing #2 in the first place. Except for the latter part. Again, he's still a guy with no experience, so what are you paying extra money for? The hope that he'll one day be coordinator material? Why not just go pay for a proven QB coach? There are plenty out there for BYU.
You could absolutely bring him on to be a QB coach, but there's no reason for the "real money" thing. If a guy with no experience is demanding big money for an assistant spot, and won't come with out it, he's not worth the risk. That's not the kind of attitude that will get you through the ranks. Everyone has to work up.

The only fact is that he's a legend [player], and we possibly could have seen if it would work out on the coaching end if he went through the ranks at a reasonable rate [$$] and earned it.

Unfortunately (for those coaches), but fortunately for BYU, having them all come in was kind of what the school needed for a wakeup call, and the higher ups were convinced to pay more and branch out for real coaches. It was a sort of necessary failure for a stingy program.

I have no idea why they didn't register the fact that hiring a first-time HC would be better with some experience. It's common for an AD to assist a new guy, but you go out and basically tell yourself that adding Lamb negates the need for experience on offense? Especially when the HC is a former DC.
