You better believe that the U.S. is an Empire. It may not have colonized in the same ways that the old world empires did, but we engage in economic imperialism year after fetchin’ year. Our colonies are Latin America, our oil-producibg allies, and the Asian markets who labor to ensure our t-shirts cost $10.75 instead of $15.75. Our policies, whether good or bad for our allies, shape their policies. Our military might keeps most everyone at bay in terms of serious conflict. Even the threat of our arsenal is enough to scare the lights out of most nations. If we pull out of trade deals, country’s economies can collapse.

We are not an empire is like saying water is dry. Our methods are just different.
