Took my father-in-law to first game. Turns out he's a yeller.
He's a homebody so has never been to a game, but I finally got him to come with me (drove an hour). Sat on the west side, halfway up. It didn't take long for things to not go well and he started expressing his frustrations with some rather healthy yelling. He started small with things like, "Come on guys!" By the time we missed the first pass on offense he let go a "That was ridiculous! You've got to be kidding me! Hold the ball!" When I say he's a yeller, I mean he held absolutely nothing back--as loud as his voice can go. People three and four rows away started furtively turning their heads towards us to see who it was.

By the end of the first quarter he was completely losing his mind, yelling, "We are absolutely being outplayed, completely outplayed! We look like a high school! That is disgraceful, how could we be this stupid?! 23 and a half points?! What a joke!" (Many heads turning...)

I am a pretty quiet game-watcher. i wanted to let him enjoy the game how he wanted to enjoy it (or hate it), but I couldn't take it any longer. I finally put my hand on his leg and said, "I'm concerned you're going to have a stroke--you might want to dial it back a bit." He was annoyed and said, "The whole point of going to a game is to yell your fool head off!"

He settled down when the game turned around, but it was interesting. Is he right?

How would you rank the appropriateness of yelling 1-5? 1 = always talk normally to avoid any disturbance to other fans, 5 = yell your fool head off if you want with no restraint (as long as it's clean).
