Despite all the people calling for Tanner to be benched, he played decently. The pick-six was obviously awful. The question on whether or not he should be benched has more to do the perceived tradeoff between his moderate level of play relative to the upside of getting Zach Wilson experience and beginning to plan for the future (as well as give the fans some near term hope for a new age once Zach starts). It's a tough call, as BYU is only 3 wins away from being bowl eligible. NMSU is a gimme. Hawaii, NIU and UMass are all winnable games. It seems reasonable that BYU could win 3 of those 4 games with likely losses to Utah and Boise State. But honestly, if BYU loses to Utah State and Utah in the same year and doesn't go bowling, it could be curtains for this coaching staff.
BYU has bigger problems than QB. But QB is obviously the most visible lightning rod and our QB play is not inspiring. But it could be worse, too. What would you do if your job were on the line?
