A tournament would be fairer and give more access to outsiders, but football

is more violent than most of the other collegiate sports out there.

Having a lot of teams play one extra game is a lot less violence on the players than having a number of teams play up to 4 extra games.

Due to football's violent nature, the bowl system has a place more than extended post-season tournaments.
