I think there is a group of players who end up playing at BYU who come home from missions, get caught up in the dating life, getting married, and starting a family. They know they aren't going pro, or don't even want to. But playing football is a means to an end, it pays for their education, and in the meantime, they can be cool. So they put in enough effort to see the field, but they aren't all that concerned about the results. They don't get all bummed out if they lose, it's just another day at the office for them.
