I don’t see why it matters that no one outside UW and UU (and BYU I guess) fans care.

I wonder if it’s related to the BYU-church connection. Where a lot of fans might see the mission of BYU athletics as a platform to gain publicity for the church. As a result, national attention and validation may be extremely to many BYU fans.

Just a thought.

But I don’t think any of that matters for Utah. Or really anyone outside the CFP or NY6.
