Based on experience there are a couple things working against your son
Foremost is his height and his position.
I've been told D1 schools want their defensive ends to start at 6'4". They can get them a little shorter on the interior but they like a certain body type out on the edge.
That means your son world either need to bulk up and move inside or play outside backer.
