Get someone to takeover and then go back to wife. That is what I would want done. As a parent, the kids must be a priority especially injured and alone. The wife/spouse rises to a high level because of the severity, which is why I would go there first, but then I would make sure the kids are being watched and cared for by people they trust, before going back to the spouse.
